Handfastings

Handfasting, wiccan wedding, pagan wedding, Celtic wedding, Scottish wedding

"Handfasting is a rural folkloric and neopagan custom, initially found in western European countries, in which a couple hold a commitment ceremony. The commitment may be seen as temporary and secular, or of a longer, spiritual variety, depending on the context."

"Handfastings are commonly used in Wiccan and Pagan ceremonies. Today the handfasting is more literal: a couple will bind their hands together during the wedding ceremony (before, during, or after reciting their vows), often to symbolize their connection and devotion to one another."

"A Pagan or Wiccan handfasting can be several things, depending on the couple's wishes. It can be a legal marriage. It can be a commitment ceremony for a common law or civil union. ... Sometimes, due to the small size of our religious body, it can be difficult to find a clergy member who is also a legal officiant."

Baptisms

Baptism

"Baptism has long been an important element in many spiritual traditions. You are probably most familiar with seeing it practiced in various denominations of Christianity; Catholics, Assemblies of God, and of course Baptists partake in baptisms, as well as most others. It is viewed as a rite of passage wherein the participant is inducted into a community of faith. It also symbolizes a believer's dedication to God and/or a set of religious rules."

"There are two types of baptisms: affusion and immersion. Affusion baptism involves sprinkling or gently pouring water on the head of the participant. This version is typically performed on those with limited mobility such as the elderly, babies, or the handicapped (though it can be used for anyone).

Immersion baptisms, as the name suggests, involve full submerging the participant in water. For this type of ceremony, you’ll need a pool, a font, or a natural body of water like a lake or river."

"Many Christian denominations invoke the Holy Trinity during a baptismal ceremony. This tradition comes from the Biblical account of the baptism of Jesus as told in the Gospels. During the events, God the Father opened the heavens and sent down the Holy Spirit to Jesus Christ, the son."

Last Rites

Last rites.

"The Last rites are meant to prepare the dying person's soul for death, by providing absolution for sins by penance, sacramental grace and prayers for the relief of suffering through anointing, and the final administration of the Eucharist, known as "Viaticum", which is Latin for "with you on the way." It is mainly a Catholic rite, but as an ordainined minister, I am on-call for this somber duty at any time.
